Trying Something New
I've been sick of my hair lately, and am ready for a change. I don't know if I want to change the color or the cut or both. I definitely want to change the look, though. The Paul Mitchell school served me well for a haircut last semester, but I don't know if I trust their opinions on what direction I should take my style next. Therefore, until I can get back home to Jacquelyn, my trusted friend and stylist, I'm doing what I can to give myself a new look on my own. I had some down time yesterday, and I used it to try something new, and here's what I came up with!
Note that this is only one of two times this whole year that I have worn my bangs back from my face. I loved it, and am definitely going to try it some more this week.

Making Do
Due to my camera screen being tragically destroyed in a backpack smashing incident last semester, so I have been relying on the cameras of others to fill my documentation needs. Unfortunately, Kristen and her camera were not nearby at work today while I was taking down the Valentine's decorations to make way for the St. Patrick's Day plastic garlands, creepy porcelain dolls, and new Goose for All Seasons leprechaun get-up. In perusing Facebook, however, I found some good pictures from others to provide overdue documentation of new clothes from Christmas, life here at the Y, and yes, Susan-approved Jedi Boots.
Me, Kristen, and Kimberly all happened to match for church on the first Sunday back from break, so we took the opportunity to pose in front of the snowy mountains. You can even see the construction of the new student center in the background! Note my new $15 Banana Republic shirt and $18 Gap skirt!
I couldn't resist snapping a self-portrait while I had brief possession of a camera.
Our friend Rick stopped by for one last visit the night before he went into the MTC, so this is us keeping our respectful distance from newly set-apart Elder Fenton. If you find yourself looking into the church in Alaska, you may be lucky to meet him! Notice here my purple sweater from Mom, and yes, the Jedi Boots! (see below for a better boot shot)
The guys were impressed by my collar. What can I say? It takes style to pull off a collar like that. ;) See here the full view of the Jedi Boots in action. This photo, unfortunately, doesn't show the cute drawstring around them, but you hopefully get the effect.
My future home, The Elms!
We snapped this picture in an apartment we looked at in Monticello after a long day of apartment-hunting. (What is it with Mormon college students and having keyboards in their apartments? I swear, we saw at least three. Maybe I'm the weird one, but there was no room for even a miniature piano in any of the apartments we checked out.) On the far left you'll see Jordin, my future roommate, making her first appearance on my blog! She's from Preston Idaho, and went to the same high school as Napoleon Dynamite. Yeah, she's that cool.
Future roomies, showing the adverse effects of Brick Oven root beer accompanied by the cookie, ice cream, hot fudge, and caramel sundae. Though these menu items prove delicious on their own, we warn against combining the two. Not good.

Soon to come: pictures of this last weekend's trip to Bountiful and documentation of the best mail day ever! For now, I'm going to study statistics, then Music 202 a little more. I have my ID midterm tomorrow, and have been listening to Bach, Beethoven, Mozart, Haydn, and Handel all day, occasionally supplemented by The Fray's new cd, of course. It feels pretty cool to be able to distinguish the different movements of Mozart's Night Music, though. If all goes well, I might even be able to start last night's episode of 24 before it's time to go to bed. May you too have a wonderful evening!

Picture This
Oh, how I wish my camera wasn't dead in my desk drawer, for I've encountered many things to document as of late. I will do my best to provide thrilling descriptions, but the rest is up to your imagination.
-I signed my first apartment housing contract yesterday! A couple weekends ago, my friends Kristen, Kimberly, Jordin, and I went knocking on countless doors to determine where we wanted to seek residency for next year. Apparently, BYU approved housing complexes are in 24 hour open house mode. I thought it seemed weird at first, but I guess in Provo, having complete strangers come to your door, asking to look around your apartment is a common occurrence, so we joined the masses and took notes on bedroom set-ups, kitchen accommodations, and couch conditions. I also made sure to ask about being able to put nails into the walls for decorating purposes, and I think that I was the only one who was drawn to one particular apartment for the sole reasons that the lighting fixtures were new and non-fluorescent, and it had six-panel doors. We didn't go for it, seeing as the complex was all girls, and mostly returned missionaries, putting them three or four years older than we soon-to-be-sophomores. Haha. The Petersen genes just can't be suppressed! We ended our with The Elms and Monticello as our top choices, and when The Elms was taking contracts at the housing fair yesterday, we jumped, signed, and now we're waiting for confirmation. It's so exciting to be able to say "I'm living at The Elms," because: A. It's way better than saying, "I'm in Helaman Halls," thereby labeling you as a freshman, and B. Now we're finished dealing with the frustration and anxiety of housing selection. Woohoo!
-I read Susan's post this morning about her beautiful Valentine's cookies, and couldn't help but laugh, thinking about the sugar cookies I helped make at work yesterday. These heart-shaped delicacies are monstrously huge, thick, chewy, store-bought "cookies," that we topped with highlighter-pink frosting (no joke, they probably glow in the dark) and multicolored sprinkles. I would do anything to be able to take a picture of one the plates of leftovers sitting in my desk drawer because they are something to behold. If only I could introduce Nan to the wonders of lightly tinted butter cream icing with tasteful white icing accents.
-I have recently discovered, much to my dismay, that EasyMac is pretty gross. I bought a few microwavable bowls of it at Smith's while ago, because they were on sale "10 for 10" (I can't resist anything that's "10 for 10") but upon eating one for lunch, realized that the delicious EasyMac I remember from childhood was clearly an adolescent delusion. Worse yet, I discovered a bowl of EasyItalian in the vending machine yesterday! Fake-cheese-and-noodle-cuisine has introduced "marinara sauce" into the market. Kraft needs to stop this madness.

You Deserve it
In his talk from the last General Conference, "Finding Joy in the Journey," President Monson says that:
There is no tomorrow to remember if we don't do something today.
I had to think about this for a while, but finally it came to me that this means that if I want to have a productive day tomorrow, I need to start working today, right now. If I want to do well on my Econ midterm on Saturday, I need to start studying today. If I want God's presence in my day tomorrow, I need to invite him today.
Just this morning, I read Joshua 3:5, which says to:

I prepare for tomorrow's miracles by what I do today. I'm behind in all my classes, and catching up will require strength and ability way beyond my own capacity, but by trying my best today, God will be able to help me tomorrow.
Right after I finished reading these scriptures and thinking about this this morning, I got a text message from my Dad, which was about the best text I've ever received. He said:

Valentine Style, Physics Department Edition
My Aunt Susan is my model for style; I'll jump off of whatever fashion cliff she says is trendy. At her fabulous store, Valentine's style abounds in polka dots, platters, and glass glitter touches. Click here to see more of her fabulous February finds!
At the BYU Physics Department, however, we've got some Valentine's style of our own.
These gellie shapes come in adorable cupids and hearts and stick to any glass surface. Perfect for every window and display case, these little bits of red and pink festivity really add a nice touch to wherever they are stuck.
In case the sticky cupids aren't enough to fill all your glass decorating needs, these cute hearts come in a variety of patterns and colors, appropriate for any decorating scheme. Truly fabulous.
If you don't have time to make homemade fudge this season, don't worry! Just find an old stuffed animal, put last years Valentine's candy in a cellophane bag, and display them like this for a cute touch to any corner. The candy may be stale, but the idea comes across wonderfully. It's touches like these that warm the heart this season.
Even this wise owl knows how to get into the Valentine's spirit! A fabulous plastic wreath like this can be placed anywhere to make even the creepiest creatures festive!
This "Goose for All Seasons" is a must-have for your year-round decorating needs. This cutie-pie is a constant presence in my office, and all I have to do is change it's little outfit to match the time of year. What's more, the gender of this goose even changes with the seasons! Currently, she's rocking the cupid look, but come March, he'll be a happy-go-lucky leprechaun. No matter it's gender or outfit, this must-have item brightens any office 24/7.
Now, this display really has something to offer. Who needs the ever-fabulous glass glitter when you can have stretchy sequin fabric? Drape it over objects of varying heights to create levels and top with Thumbs-Up Hitch-Hiker Hearts to achieve ultimate style.
